This design is based on a small group of tall-case clocks attributed to the Townsend / Goddard cabinet makers of Newport, Rhode Island. This specific clock is most closely related to plate 192, American Furniture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Late Colonial Period: The Queen Anne and Chippendale Styles by Morrison H. Heckscher, which is one of two known John Townsend labeled tall-case clocks.
The clock face is circa 1780, British, solid brass with the name and location of the original clock maker, Devereux Bonly, London, engraved in the roundel in the arch of the face. The clockworks is an eight-day, weight- driven mechanism with functional calendar ring. The works came from David Lindow. The works strike the hour via a bell at the top of the clockworks. The date of the clock face is perfectly consistent with the design of the clock. I was fortunate to be able to maintain historic proportions in the design due to the period face and a period-appropriate mechanism.
