The SAPFM Board extends its heartfelt thanks to all participants in the 2024 Phil Lowe Makers Challenge. We are grateful to the twenty-five members who
dedicated their time and effort to submit their work, giving us the opportunity to witness firsthand the incredible talent within our community. Each entry is a remarkable achievement, reflecting countless hours of craftsmanship and dedication.
Also thank you to the 100+ members who voted on the entries. Our results are in:
NOVICE CATEGORY
In this category, there were two entries and the winner is Austin Chandler’s Chippendale side chair in Sapele. He started from scratch by designing his own templates and used hand cut Joinery and designed his own carvings.
INTERMEDIATE CATEGORY
In this category, there were sixteen entries and the winner is Michell Hallee Wong’s Mahogany Seymour inspired table in the Federal era. She used the brick layered approach to make the apron, made built in stops on the fly rails after the knuckle joints. She did expanded research and execution of inlay and veneering on this piece and made all of the bandings in her shop.

In this category, there were seven entries and the winner is Jim Shapiro’s Seymour inspired work table. The drawers and side panels are of Oak Crotch with Mahogany rails and legs. All of Jim’s bandings and stringings of satinwood, holly, ebony, walnut and pink ivory was made by him in his shop.
Congratulations to Austin, Michelle, and Jim! All the winners will receive an engraved plaque in Brass that is on a solid wood mounting
